Types of safety glass
We supply toughened glass, laminated glass, and toughened/laminated. Toughened glass is up to 5 times stronger than normal glass, and is often used for glass shelves, table tops, and shower screens. Laminated glass is used for vehicle windscreens and security glass. Both types of glass have a wide variety of uses for your home or business, and can be used for floors, stairs, roofs, aquariums, and skylights.
Toughened glass
Although not unbreakable, toughened glass has a higher thermal strength than normal and it has the ability to withstand greater pressures. Its structural strength makes it ideal for partition walls, desks and glass doors. In the event of it actually breaking, it will break into small pieces and therefore is less likely to cause large cuts or gashes.
Laminated glass
Laminated glass is formed of two layers of glass which are permanently bonded together with a plastic middle layer forming a very strong glass that holds together even when it’s broken. It has increased security, reduced noise pollution and more design choice as it is available in many colours and is supplied straight. We may be able to cut it the same day.
Toughened / laminated glass
A third type of safety glass is toughened/laminated, which consists of two pieces of toughened glass bonded with a plastic interlayer. If one layer breaks, the other layer plus the plastic still holds it all together. It's safe to stand on and is often used for glass-only balustrades.
Critical locations for safety glass
When glass is situated in any area where there is an increased likelihood of accidents occurring, it must be safety glass. It can be toughened or laminated. In some circumstances, float glass can be used as an alternative.
